How to Design Mini Perfumes

Designer perfumes are considered a luxury, but making them yourself does not mean they have to be an expensive luxury. Mini perfumes are especially popular because they come in containers including roll-on bottles, purse sprayers, atomizers, vials and miniature bottles, making it easy to take them with you on the go. Mini perfumes make excellent gifts for children and adults and can be just as fragrant as expensive, designer perfumes. Perfume making is simple but will require patience, as it is a trial and error process.
Determine what you want your perfume to smell like, and purchase fragrance oils or essential oils accordingly. You may want floral, fruity, bakery-inspired or herbal scent. Fragrance oils are synthetic and used in most high-end designer perfumes. Essential oils are better used for aromatherapy or an all-natural product and will have an earthy, citrus, floral or woody smell. If you are looking to create your own signature fragrance, choose one-note oils like sandalwood, vanilla, grapefruit, coconut or strawberry, and experiment by blending combinations together. If you would rather duplicate a popular fragrance, most fragrance oil suppliers will sell duplicates of blends like pink sugar, love spell or sweet pea.

Purchase an additive for your perfume. Most fragrance oils must be diluted before applying directly on the skin as they are highly concentrated. Perfumer’s alcohol can be purchased through many fragrance oil suppliers and is a professional dilution that is added to most perfumes. Some people choose to dilute fragrance oils with water. However, since water and oil do not mix well, this method requires shaking the bottle before each use. Diluting fragrance oils with water will also create a weaker, lighter fragrance than using perfumer’s alcohol.
Purchase mini packaging for your perfumes. Several cosmetic packaging manufacturers have catalogs with images of their packaging options. Mini perfumes typically come in roll-on bottles, purse sprayers, atomizers or small vials. For mini perfumes, look for one-third ounce sizes or smaller.
